Data gathered by BuiltWith, HostingFacts, and Trellis proves what we all tech-savvy users already knew, and that’s that WordPress is by far the most popular technology for building online sites, now installed on more than a quarter of the Internet’s websites.
Playing second fiddle to WordPress is the Joomla CMS, who’s been trailing its rival for the past six years since WordPress began its domination of the CMS market and never looked back.
Third, according to BuiltWith data, are websites built on the Wix site-building platform, followed by its main competitor, Squarespace, in the fourth position. The rest of the Top 10 is occupied by Telerik Sitefinity, Weebly, Drupal, Typo3, 11 Website Builder, and Jimdo.
Seven of the top 10 most used CMS technologies are on an ascending wave, only Joomla, Typo3, and Jimdo being on a descending trend.
Breaking down the data by industry vertical, WordPress is popular in general business, news, and technology sites. Joomla remains popular on education sites, while Wix cornered the advertising and entertainment sector.
Excluding WordPress, who is a popular platform in every country on the globe, Weebly appears to dominate the US, 11 Website Builder rules the UK, while Drupal is popular in France and Canada.
