But Project Loon, on the other hand, does seem to have that potential.
Here is what Google hopes to accomplish with it by year-end: “Project Loon will continue to expand the pilot through 2014, with the goal of establishing a ring of uninterrupted connectivity around the 40th southern parallel, so that pilot testers at this latitude can receive continuous service via balloon-powered Internet,†according to its website.
What would be really thrilling is to see Amazon develop similar capabilities as well. The problem of lack of quality, fast Internet access –both here in the U.S. and around the world — is common to all the players in this space.  And as Amazon has shown with Twitch and Google with Project Wing, the two companies do have converging interests in many areas.
But if not Amazon than other companies are certain step into the void. Its reason is clear: it can only grow as much and as fast as the world’s Internet capacity allows.
